    Small Town, Big Possibilities

    August 14, 2017

Although Laramie is a small town in Wyoming, you might be surprised to learn that it is full of endless opportunity for adventure.

Laramie may be small, but I would never call it boring. The possibilities are endless if you really look around.

Mountain biker? Curt Gowdy is 25 miles away. Too far? Happy Jack is just a 9-mile journey.

Keen on jumping off cliffs into pristine mountain water? The Snowy Range Mountains are surrounded by lakes.

Enjoy playing catch or kicking the ball around? War Memorial Stadium is open to the public during the day so grab the pigskin and go play on the field that is home to the Wyoming Cowboys.

tetons.jpgCross country skier? Jump in the car and drive 10 minutes and hop on over 12 miles of groomed trail. More into downhill skiing and snowboarding? A day pass to Snowy Range ski area is $35 and 37 miles away.

Climber? Don’t drive all the way to Colorado for something that you could easily find right outside of town. Vedauwoo is known to offer some of the best climbing in North America and has routes ranging from beginner to elite. The possibilities of climbing are endless with the opportunity to sport climb, trad climb or jump on some bouldering rocks. Rally up all your friends and go on a picturesque hike and then jump in the creek - this place has it all.

The Outdoor Program at the university also offers many instructional classes to take the willing into the great outdoors. For more information on upcoming adventures, visit their page.

Saratoga is only a mountain pass away and has natural hot springs to cure all of your problems. Fort Collins is only an hour south, perfect for a daily outing and the infamous Jackson Hole is just across the state.

Not completely wowed yet? That's OK. Let’s just list off a few more things that you might fancy.

    Downtown Laramie

Downtown Laramie might appear small, but some of the best restaurants and shops can be found there. The nightlife in Laramie is something you do not want to miss and shopping does not always have to happen online.

Some of my favorite restaurants in Laramie include: Sweet Melissa, Anong’s, Thai Spice, Crowbar and more. Sweet Melissa is a vegetarian restaurant that offers some of the best food in all of Wyoming. Just ask anyone from Laramie - this is a place you do not want to miss. You want some meat on your plate? Try Born in a Barn and Crowbar right around the block. These are the most delicious and fascinating burgers in town. Missing the spicy element? Anong’s and Thai Spice work together to provide Laramie a taste of Thailand.

Looking to do some light shopping? Peruse the racks of NU2U, the secondhand store that has endless amounts of clothes that you don’t think you need, but you really do. Take those legs a little further west and look around Cross Country Connection or Atmosphere to learn more about locally made apparel and name-brand outdoor equipment. Poppy’s is the perfect place where the beautiful clothes and flowers will definitely catch your eye.

How about a nice cup of coffee to get the ball rolling on another great day? Coal Creek Coffee Company is one of Laramie’s unforgettable coffee shops. Sit down with a cup of joe, a nice croissant and enjoy the hipster vibes and community feeling, as well as the open mic nights that bring some of the most beautiful voices out from the shadows. Likewise, stop by Turtle Rock and Night Heron if you seek more variety.

    University of Wyoming Student Activities

If you thought the University of Wyoming couldn’t get any better, the Union offers multiple FREE activities to students throughout the summer and school year. Every Wednesday during the summer, there is a new band that plays in Simpson Plaza and widely known musical guests visit campus every year thanks to the Large Scale Events Committee.

‘Friday Night Fever’ is known for free movies, activities and special guests. Gallery 234 showcases amazing art from students right here on campus. For more information check out the Campus Activities Center’s page here.

See, Laramie is all you want and more. It’s quiet but can also be loud.

Laramie, nicknamed The Gem City, was not voted the sixth best college town for nothing. The Snowy Range Mountains are 30 minutes away and offer the exact view you need for your Instagram feed. Food, drinks, entertainment and a friendly place to be your best self is simply waiting for you.
