Nestled between two mountain ranges in the southeast corner of the state, Laramie is home to the University of Wyoming. The Gym City of the Plains has much to offer, aside from the picture-perfect views. With a small town feel, yet bustling energy a university town, what more could you ask for?
From restaurants to the music scene, Laramie has it all. Keep reading to find out 6 reasons why Laramie is the place to get your degree.
1. The Food
Aside from your education, this is obviously the most important aspect to take into consideration. Lucky for us, Laramie has no shortage of awesome restaurants. The Crow Bar and Grill is my personal favorite; serving up awesome burgers and pizza. Try the Pad Thai fries and your life will be forever changed. If you love a good coffee shop, Coal Creek Coffee Company offers some of the best there is! Laramie is also home to great Thai, Mexican, vegetarian food, and more.
Laramie itself has much to offer. As compared to other college towns where campus is separated from the general community, UW sits right in the middle of Laramie. Perhaps it’s because we are the only university in the state coupled with the fact that Wyoming tends to be a very welcoming community, but the University of Wyoming and the Laramie Community are closely entwined. The summer season offers us weekly farmers markets as well as Jubilee Days, where fall offers Halloween Ghost Tours and haunted hay rides around the city. The community hosts a variety of other events throughout the year as well.
Hiking, skiing, snowboarding, and rock climbing are all just a short drive in either direction of the city. If you prefer to stay in town, the recently renovated Half-Acre Gymnasium on campus offers all of the workout equipment you could possibly dream of as well as an indoor climbing wall and a variety of club sports. If you’d rather sweat it out in a class, a variety of fitness classes are offered here throughout the week at different times to fit your busy schedule.
4. The Music Scene
When you think of Wyoming you may not think of up and coming bands right away, but Laramie is actually home to many talented artists and bands. Well-known local band Elk Tongue performs around Wyoming and Colorado and recently submitted to perform at the South by Southwest Music Festival in 2018. Multiple coffee shops in Laramie offer monthly open mic nights along with the Wyoming Union. Coal Creek hosts different shows throughout the year, along with the local Gryphon Theatre and the university itself. There’s always something new to hear if you’re looking. If you yourself are a musician, Laramie even has its own recording studios to offer.
5. The People
It doesn’t matter where you are, it could be argued that it’s the people that really make or break the experience. Laramie is wonderful because you will meet people from many different backgrounds; from all over the US and the world. It’s not just the student body though, the professors at our COB come from many interesting backgrounds across industries. You can trust you’re getting the best education possible from professors that not only know about their material but have experience working in the field. If you get to know your professors, you may be surprised what you find.
6. Location, Location, Location
Believe it or not, Laramie is in the perfect location to reach everything from shopping to snowboarding. Head West and you’ll find yourself in the Snowy Range where you can ski, tube, and snowboard in the winter; and hiking and camping is plentiful in the warmer months. Head East you will find Vedauwoo a gorgeous place to go for a day hike or get in some rock climbing.
Not into the outdoors as much? Don’t worry, we’ve still got you covered! Fort Collins, CO where you can find a brand-new mall with stores still being added, is only an hour away. H&M and Nordstrom Rack? Not too shabby. If you’re willing to drive a little further, Denver is right down the road. Multiple malls and endless stores await you as well as museums, an aquarium, and a zoo. It’s perfect for a weekend expedition with your roommate.
So, what are you waiting for? Come visit! You can read all about it but you can’t truly get a grasp of Laramie until you’ve come and experienced it for yourself. Schedule a visit with us, grab a latte from Coal Creek, and learn about what we can do for your career. Then head over to the Crowbar and Grill where your life will continue to be changed by some Pad Thai fries.
