    Who is Erica Smith and Northwestern Mutual?

    Erica Smith is the Recruiter for the Fort Collins Northwestern Mutual. She is from the great state of Georgia and recently moved to Fort Collins to support her soon-to-be husband as he pursues his dreams as a college football coach. While new to the area, she has been with Northwestern Mutual since August 2012 and has some firsthand experience with negotiating salaries!

    A survey by revealed that only 37% of people always negotiate their salaries, while 20% never do. What category do you want to be a part of? It also revealed that 84% of employers EXPECT candidates to negotiate their salary!

    What are you really negotiating?

    Remember before you can negotiate, you must first get clarity on what they are actually offering; for example, salary, health benefits, travel and parking expenses, 401k contributions, and tuition reimbursement. Ask for the offer letter and thoroughly review it!

    How do you negotiate?

    Do your homework and be prepared! What is the salary history/range for that job? What is your experience level? Start higher than you expect to arrive at. Counter their first offer, see where they come back at and then make a decision. Remember, what is your personal bottom line?

    Never make it about…?

    Now that you have the “dos” to negotiating your salary, what are the “don’ts”? Never make your reasoning about your personal needs to cover your expenses. Never make your reasoning about what others make in the firm. These are a sure way to get your offer rescinded.

    *Don’t be afraid of the “no”. Know your value!*
