By: Ransom Gates, Current president of the American Marketing Association (AMA) at the University of Wyoming.
Who are we
The American Marketing Association is a professional student association for individuals and organizations leading the practice, teaching and development of marketing knowledge at the University of Wyoming. Our principle role is to serve as a forum to connect like-minded individuals and foster knowledge sharing, provide resources, tools and training, and support marketing practice and thought leadership around our community.
Why I joined
I joined the AMA during the fall semester of my junior year at the University. I immediately felt connected to the members and quickly became active within the group. The members were more than willing and able to provide me resources and knowledge to enhance my professional development, and that was instrumental in my decision to continue to be active in the organization. I also really appreciated that there were several fun social opportunities for me to better connect with the members with events such as a Halloween party, trivia nights, and pot lucks.
The culture of the AMA is one that recognizes and rewards hard work, and after just one semester of being avidly active in the organization, I was recommended to run for an officer position. After being the financial officer for a semester, I then was elected as the chapter president. Thus, members have a great opportunity to quickly move up within the organization if they prove their credibility and diligent work ethic to the other members.
What we do
During the year, we largely focus on professional development for the members by providing job opportunities, resume and LinkedIn builders, professional pictures, business cards, professional dress tips, networking opportunities, and other professional services. Our goal is to not only connect our members to careers and internships across the country, but, more importantly, to also provide our members with the tools and resources necessary in becoming an impressive job candidate.
We also seek to have a pervasive and positive presence on the campus and the community. With events such as the forum on sustainable business and the sustainable art auction, we have a unique opportunity to promote positive values that carry through to students, businesses, and individuals in the community. Our members are also sought after to provide assistance for state business competitions and conferences with organizations such as DECA and the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). During these events, AMA members help out judging the various competitions, speaking on panels, and delivering presentations.
In addition, just this year, we started taking on marketing campaigns for other student organizations at the University, in which our members have the opportunity to showcase their marketing skills and experience by assisting the organizations to promote an event, create promo videos, and market via our many media outlets. This is a great opportunity to earn job-like marketing experience that potential employers are always impressed to see on a resumè.
Every year, the most active members have an opportunity to attend the International AMA Collegiate Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana. As a large amount of funding is given to our organization for this conference, the trip is mostly paid for. At this conference, the members have an opportunity to compete in various sales and marketing competitions, attend sessions and workshops taught by illustrious business professionals, connect with various companies, network with other students, and enjoy several days in one America’s most entertaining cities.
Who can get involved
I implore anyone that’s interested in developing themselves professionally, increasing their marketing experience, and being a part of professional organization that has a distinct positive presence in the community and the University of Wyoming to give the American Marketing Association a try. Our organization is made of students of all majors, not just marketing and business majors, as we aspire to reach the entire student body. There are several opportunities for photographers, graphic designers, and computer science, and much more areas of study.
